The Surfboard Industry moved to cheaper construction of boards with materials such as foam, resin, and fiberglass in the 60s and 70s. The push was to mass produce boards at a lower cost. The decision was predicated on profits vs. art, function, and performance.

The price range is $875 - $1850 for a wood surfboard. According to Barry Haun (from the Surfing Heritage Foundation), "while wood construction costs more it outlasts boards made of foam, fiberglass, and resin"...as such the cost of ownership for the purchase of a wooden board outperforms the costs of ownership of boards made from other types of materials.
